Due to the urgent global demand for PPE as part of the COVID-19 response, there has been a need for many nations to source PPE products from new suppliers. Demand for PPE across the NHS is at unprecedented levels. The PPE Dedicated Supply Channel’s focus is on providing essential PPE supplies to the thousands of health and care workers and NHS trusts across England.
Before supplying a new product to the NHS, every product must meet the relevant technical and regulatory standards in place during the pandemic.
The UK Government has published essential technical requirements for critical PPE for health and care workers across NHS organisations in all parts of the United Kingdom. This will continue to be updated as further essential technical requirements are developed. These requirements have been prepared by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and have been informed by NHS infection prevention control experts.
The new essential technical requirements are also consistent with World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidance for protecting health and social care workers from COVID-19. To review the PPE Essential specifications please read the Governments’ Essential PPE Technical Specifications. Further information is available online from the HSE and MHRA. User guidance is also available for those wishing to propose the manufacture, supply or donation of PPE to the NHS. This is via the centralised receipt and technical assurance process which also ensures the relevant regulatory approval is in place, before any purchasing or donation decision is made.
Protecting the safety of health and care workers and UK patients remains critical to this overall Government approach.
